Detailed course description

Beginners

In this beginners’ course, we will learn to read, write and speak the basics of Greek. We’re starting with the alphabet and pronunciation and we move on to learning how to talk about ourselves and have small conversations about everyday life.

In specific, we are getting familiar with themes like: introducing ourselves, talking about work, family and friends, transport, daily schedules, the weather, shopping and placing orders in cafes and restaurants.

The method that is used is Επικοινωνήστε ελληνικά 1, together with exercises and activities from other sources.

No knowledge of Greek is required, but some knowledge of English is necessary for the beginning.

Low intermediate

Starting where the beginners course stops, this course continues with some more complicated structures. We learn how to engage in more challenging conversations and can understand frequently used expressions used about topics of most immediate relevance. We learn how to talk about the past and future.

Themes that we become familiar with at this level: housing and accommodation, directions, travelling and leisure time activities, life stories, future plans, employment and applying for jobs, visiting the doctor, going to the bank, the post office, the police and the municipality.

The method that is used is Επικοινωνήστε ελληνικά 1, together with exercises and activities from other sources.

Required knowledge: It is expected that you have successfully completed a beginners’ course. If you are not sure about your level, please contact the teacher.

Intermediate I and II

These courses continue from Low Intermediate, into more complex sentences and more advanced vocabulary and grammar.

We understand the main points of clear standard themes encountered daily in the house, work, leisure, etc. We can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in Greece. We grow able to participate in general discussions about housing, social gatherings, commuting and traffic, shopping, food and diet. We can describe habits, past experiences and events, plans, dreams and ambitions, and we can give reasons and opinions.

The method that is used is ΚΛΙΚ στα ελληνικά επίπεδο Α1 and ΚΛΙΚ στα ελληνικά επίπεδο B1, with the addition of exercises, texts, and activities from other sources.

Required knowledge: it is expected that you have successfully completed a course up to A2. If you are not sure about your level, please contact the teacher.

Upper intermediate I, II and III

This course allows us to develop a better understanding of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, such as sports, fun, travelling, sightseeing, and celebrations, as well as the environment, health, education, culture, mass media and the arts. We revisit structures we already know and we develop the ability to interact in Greek with a degree of fluency that makes a spontaneous interaction with native speakers, even in more complex situations, easy. We become able to produce clear and detailed texts which express opinions and arguments pro or against issues.

The method that is used is ΚΛΙΚ στα ελληνικά επίπεδο B1 and ΚΛΙΚ στα ελληνικά επίπεδο B2, with the addition of exercises, texts, and activities from other sources.

Required knowledge: it is expected that you have successfully completed a course up to B1 level. If you are not sure about your situation, please contact the teacher.

Advanced I

In this final course, we develop the ability to understand a wide range of challenging texts, and gain a larger cultural knowledge that enables us to recognize implicit meaning. We can express ourselves fluently and use the language effectively in social, academic and professional contexts.

Themes we become familiar with at this level are: business and career, economics and politics, Greek history and the history of the Greek language, Greek literature, theatre and music, national monuments and celebrations, as well as themes that come up in the interactions in class, especially fitted to the needs of the students.

The method used is Επικοινωνήστε Ελληνικά 3, together with texts and speaking exercises from other sources.

Required knowledge: it is expected that you have successfully completed a course up to B2 level. If you are not sure about your situation, please contact the teacher.
